Plain White Bread
There's nothing boring about Plain White Bread

When there's raisin nut, cinnamon sugar and whole wheat – why choose plain, white bread? It might not be the most creative choice for an after-school snack, but it makes an interesting band name.
Vocalist Jamie Higgins, lead guitarist Mike Bella, rhythm guitarist/back up vocalist David Smith, bassist Wayne Dean and drummer Tim Russell were listening to the radio and realized many successful rock bands have named themselves after food.
"A Limp Bizkit song came on and then a Red Hot Chili Peppers song came on and someone made the mention 'there's a lot of bands out there making their reference to food. What kind of food can we be?' " Mr. Russell said.
The band liked the idea of referencing itself to white bread because its something average that everyone's had at one time or another.
"We're just average, everyday guys, playing music, having fun, and you can take it or leave it. We're just plain white bread," Mr. Russell said.
The band never intended to become a Wilmington favorite. It formed only last October just to "jam," but it has become a fixture on the Wilmington music scene.
"We're really excited about how quickly people have taken to us," Mr. Russell said. "We just got together to jam and have fun, and it just snowballed into what turned out to be a good band."
Mr. Russell and Mr. Smith began jamming together in Mr. Russell's dental lab. Band practice was held at night until the band outgrew the space. Mr. Higgins joined the jam session after a little arm-pulling from Mr. Russell, who had to call Mr. Higgins twice and show up at his work for him to come to the first jam session.
The trio decided a lead guitarist and bassist also were needed and ran an ad in the newspaper. Mr. Bella, a Star-News supervisor, was the first to answer the ad.
"I basically took everyone else's name and put them on hold because he was so good," Mr. Russell said.
The band found its bassist, Mr. Dean, working as the soundman at a Jet 22 performance.
Plain White Bread began as a cover band, playing songs by modern rock acts such as Puddle of Mudd, Creed, 3 Doors Down and Tantric. It also covers classics by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company and Jimmy Buffett.
"It's funny to see the younger people out there singing to Puddle of Mudd and turn around a little while later and play Margaritaville, and the same people are singing and dancing," Mr. Russell said.
The band's main songwriters – Mr. Smith and Mr. Bella – are working on original material for the band's first demo CD that it hopes to finish soon.
